What to do when competitors copy you

Let me ask you something – do you ever get competitors copying you?

We do.

It can be frustrating.

Here’s how I think about it.


So, we get a lot of agencies copying us.

The content we produce. The landing pages we launch. The campaigns we run.

Yes, it can be frustrating to see a competitor copying you, but if you really think about it, it’s not that bad…

I’ve said it before.

Every company is different. Every campaign is different. Every execution is different.

So your competition can copy you, but what matters isn’t the landing page, or the campaign, or the content.

It’s how you got there.

Let me explain.

Let’s say a competitor copied one of your landing pages.

It sucks, I get it.

But what they don’t know is all the different things you tested to get it there.

And that’s where it’s at.

Someone can copy you, but they don’t have the same audience as you, the same brand as you, or the same campaigns as you.

So it won’t work the same.

Which brings me to my next point.

If people are copying you, it’s because you’re doing something worth copying, which is cool.

It probably also means that you’re leading the way, which is also cool.

So if that’s where you are, you need to keep pushing the boundaries of everything you’re doing.
Keep testing new things. Put out more content. Put out better content. Figure out new channels. Then scale them.

Basically, you want to be doing so many things that your competitors can copy one or two of them, but they can’t keep up with your speed of iteration.

So, if you are being copied, don’t be too worried.

Just keep pushing hard on everything you’re doing so your competitors can’t keep up.

That’s how we approach marketing for ourselves and our clients.

We get copied a lot, but we take it as a compliment and a challenge.
